You can do the most important, outrageous, memorable, interesting thing ever done but without a proper storytelling strategy no one will know it’s happened. The communications behind a mega national level event has to be even larger than the event itself in order to get the mass attention that an event such as Outrun Rare needs and deserves.
The sole reason you and your community are hearing about Outrun Rare is Stephanie Gillis-Paulgaard and Take Roots Consulting. Stephanie stepped into the Outrun team the first week it was assembled about 24 months ago. She informed me right away that she loved the bones of our project and that her first goal was to create a conversation. She wasn’t just okay with raising a million dollars but to have rare disease be a topic and conversation point amongst every dinner table and water cooler all across Canada. Since then she has patiently had countless talks with me and the team developing strategies about how to hit home with average Canadians, open dialogue, create conversations, and most importantly open Canadians eyes to the looming issues confronting families living with rare disease. Step by step Stephanie has walked us through her vision and strategy and got us all believing that we will change rare disease in Canada forever. It goes well beyond what you think a PR/Communications Lead would bring to the table, its branding, presentation coaching, directional guidance, media involvement, news releases and of course social media.
Our reach to this point has far exceeded my expectations. I alway knew we had a good idea and this run across Canada might have legs (pun intended) but the sheer interest from corporate sponsors, the general public, running communities and the rare disease communities has blown me away.
I’m sure Outrun Rare would have got by without professional communications support but I have never been one to just get by. Hell, I’m running the 7200 km across Canada in just 66 days. Our Outrun Rare team is full of overachievers and Stephanie has got to be on the top of that list. I only hope to equal the same effort every step across Canada that Stephanie has shown me the past 24 months.
Thank you Steph for bringing Outrun Rare to the next level.
